Sean Sargeant

United States Marine Corps, 1988-Present

Current job: Deputy Probation Officer for the County of Orange
Union: Orange County Employees Association

Sean Sargeant, a deputy probation officer for the Orange County Probation Department, served in Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan, and was a member of the last crew on the Battleship New Jersey, which was used in WWII. While Sargeant found success as a Marine, he continued his service to the community once he became a reserve Marine in 1996. He developed a sense of responsibility for the Marines who served before him and was active in veteran related activities in the years following his retirement from active duty. In 2011, he became involved with the first Orange County Stand Down event, where volunteers erect a temporary tent city where homeless veterans sleep, can get access to medical and dental care, haircuts, clothes and other services.

On public service/armed service: “If you treat somebody with dignity and respect—and you show them that door, and walk them through it once understanding they may fail but they’ll get back up—that’s how you build confidence. I gauge my success off my probationers’ success.”
